CORVID-19 Hill-walking is great exercise and it is good to get out in the outside world and it is inherently safer and healthier than staying indoors. But we still lneed to take precautions whilst outside. Please do not go out walking if you are showing sisns of Corvid-19. When out walking make sure you give people space - 1m at least and preferable 2m. Remember that if it feels too crowded then walk away and try somewhere else. If you get into difficulty the MRT will come out to help you but they should not have to put themselves into danger from this virus. Take Care Out There.

Mill Hill and Featherbed Moss are the high points of the rounded moors south of the A57 at Snake summit. These are paired with some interesting valley walking to give a route within the moors north of Kinder.

You can walk up the road to the Snake Summit but best to get away from the road. Follow the well marked path up Doctor's gate until it meets the Pennine Way. From here walk south to get to the Snake Road. Cross the road and through the gate. There is a well made path all the way over Featherbed Moss and onto Mill Hill. A relaxing walk with views of the north of Kinder. Remember to turn around to see Bleaklow over the Snake road. The top of Mill Hill is marked with a small pile of stones and a marker. One of the least impressive summits ever. (4.0kms. 140m. 1hrs. 30min.)

From the summit continue along the Pennine Way to descend to the col before Kinder. A footpath crossroads is reached. The way is left, east to follow the Snake Path down the valley. This is again a good path and easy to follow all the way to the forest. Through the gate, the route now continues through the forest. Follow the white marker posts. In some places forestry works have been undertaken. At the botton there is a footbridge over the stream. Cross the stream and then through the gate to follow the path up Lady Clough. continuing downstream will lead to the Snake Inn. Blue marker posts indicate the route that follows the line of the stream uphill through the forest. Continue along the line of the path as it crosses a forestry track. Eventually the forest finishes and a stile is crossed. Up the steap hillside is the A57 but to avoid walking along the road continue alondside the stream via the small sheep track. This just keeps climbing uphill between the stream and the road. The bends at Doctor's Gate are obvious from the signs. Climb the wall which is easier just past the parking and carefully cross the road to return to the car. No road walking which is good. (7.5kms. 40m. 2hrs. 20min.)

21st May 2019 Have changed the route a bit, mainly to avoid walking along the A57 at all. Now there is no road walking - good. I also changed the start to Doctor's Gate but actually parking at Birchen Clough works just as well. The route can be walked clockwise or anticlockwise. I walked this anticlockwise to get to the top fast with the slower walk down the Snake path, although this does mean an uphill finish. A great walk through the forest at the end though.
