Sir William Hill is home to a massive communications mast and as such can be seen from a large area of this central part of the Peak District. It sits on the edge of Eyam Moor, which is a high area situated above Eyam and Grindleford. The views, because of this are good especially towards the Stanage and Burbage areas. The walk up Sir William Hill and back is short so this walk includes a walk down to Stoke Ford and then back to Sir William Hill

Start up the Byway of Sir William Road. Note that this is a legal right of way for scrambling bikes and 4x4 cars and you may meet some up here. Follow the road to the high point. On the left is the communications mast that so dominates this area of the Peak District. On the right is the trig point and worth climbing over the style to get to the trig point and admire the views. Walk back to the road and continue along the road to meet a minor road. After about 20m along the minor road take the track north west. This is followed to the second path junction at SK206780. Take the path right, not through the stile, but alongside the forest. This is followed downhill until it takes a steep dogleg left to meet the path down Bretton Clough. This is followed alongside Bretton Brook to Stoke Ford. Stoke ford is the meeting of the two rivers, and a number of footpaths. There is a small seat to sit and rest before the climb out of the valley. (3.5kms. 80m. 1hrs. 10min.)

Climb back along the track you descended for 100m or so and take the path that climbs to the ridge beside the wall. This climbs to Eyam Moor. After the path takes a significant left turn, you reach a significant 4 way path junction at SK213788 just short of a small wood. Take the middle path that climbs up to the ridge and through the moor to eventually reach Sir William Road. Here Sire William Hill trig point is on your right. Whilst climbing look around as the views behind you are great on this part of the moor. Follow Sir William Hill Road down to the car. (2.5kms. 80m. 1hrs. 0min.)

28th April 2025 The trig on top of Sir William Hill. The mast opposite can be seen over much of the north east Peak District and so from the trig point there are great views. A great walk up Sir William Hill then over Eyam Moor.

2nd October 2023 Previously I had cut off the walk down to Stoke Ford which is well worth doing. The views are fantastic especially over to the north and east. A great day out in the autumn sunshine; the colours of the trees and bracken are just turning gold and brown.

20th August 2021 This is a short walk but given the weather, sunshine, a great place to go out to appreciate the views and drink some coffee. Great views over to Stanage and Burbage Valley. Hathersage is most notable.
