Lathkill Dale runs from below Over Haddon up to Monyash. The lower part is heavily wooded and a protected wildlife area. The route walks through the dale first through the woods, then the scenery opens out as the route continues to the village of Monyash. The return is along the Limestone way to reach the southern branch of the dale and then back through the dale. Lathkill Dale was an industrialised valley earlier in it's history and evidence of the works can clearly be seen as the route climbs up through the dale.

From Over Haddon, follow the road steeply downhill until a path is met on the right just before some buildings and a bridge over the River Lathkill. This is the path up Lathkill Dale. Follow this path through the wood with the large trees which at many times makes this a dark valley. Soon the end of the wood, and wildlife area, is reached and the dale opens out. From here there are significant limestone cliffs visible on the north side of the valley. A footbridge is reached but not crossed, as the route continues uphill. Underfoot the limestone blocks in this area are very slippy. The route continues to the road leading to Monyash. The route follows along the pavement beside this (not too busy) road to reach the village of Manyash. (6.5kms. 100m. 2hrs. 10min.)
From the centre of Monyash follow the road south past the lovely village pool to a path signposted as the Limestone Way. The route follows the Limestone Way as it crosses a number of fields and onto One Ash Farm. Make sure you keep to the path through the farm, there are many notices to that effect within the farm environs. Just after the farm there are some steep steps to descend that takes the walker into the southern branch of Lathkill Dale. At the valley botton there is a path junction, left is Lathkill Dale as the Limestone Way turns right. Follow the path down Lathkill Dale to the bridge over the river at the main valley bottom. Follow the valley back, into the wooded area and onto the buildings below Over Haddon. Now it is the steep climb up the road to Over Haddon and the car park. (6.5kms. 20m. 2hrs. 0min.)
21st August 2024 A lovely summer day, for a change, on this walk up and down Lathkill Dale. Started early and there were very few people about, although there were more later. Monyash is a good place to stop, at the coffee stop. A great walk in Limestone country.
