Kinder is a large and relatively flat plateau that dominates the northern part of the Peak District. It is justifiably popular. However this eastern aspect of the area is less popular and on many days the walker will be alone here. Views are of Win Hill, Lose Hill and Stanage Edge rather than over to the West and Manchester. A great place to get away from the crowds in this interesting part of Kinder. This route starts at Edale and climbs up to Kinder via Ringing Roger, and then walks around the eastern edges.

Leave the car park and walk up the road to the village, continue through the village to the start of Grindsbrook, signposted. Cross the stream by the bridge and follow the path. Soon there is an obvious path turning right, away from the main Grindsbrook path, towards Ringing Roger. This steep path is followed to the flat area below Ringing Roger. Rather than climbing to the top, take path that goes east towards the top of Ollerbrook Clough. The path climbs less steeply to the weat of the clough to reach the path around the south of Kinder. Straight ahead is a fenced enclosure. Walk over to the gate in the enclosure on the small path. Rather than going through the enclosure (which you can do) follow the fence line first west then north to reach the north east corner of the enclosure. From the top of this enclosure the trig point should be visible. Follow the small path to the trig point. Alternatively, take a bearing directly to the summit. It is worth spending a while at this trig point, a well deserved rest after the climb. The best view is over to the north and east to Bleaklow and Derwent Edges. (3.0kms. 360m. 1hrs. 40min.)
After a break, walk north to reach the north Kinder edge path. There is a small path, not marked on the maps, directly from the trig point to the edge. From here walk east around the northern edge path of Kinder. Madwomans Stones are to be seen over to the east and lie just south of the path. To reach the stones there is a small path south around the nearest point from the path to the stones. Follow this path through the heather and bilberries, to reach the stones. There are many stones on the top of Kinder and these are another set of interesting rocks, with an interesting name. From the stones, Crookstone Knoll is clearly seen over to the east and there is a direct path over the moor to this easterly point of Kinder. There are many paths marked on the map and even more on the ground. Follow the path north east, cross the north - south paths and make it to Crookstone Knoll. The final part follows the line of rocks on the north of Crookstone Knoll. Here you are at the furthest east point of Kinder Scout. The views here are to the south, Win Hill, Lose Hill and the Great Ridge to Mam Tor and onto Lords Seat. (2.0kms. 20m. 0hrs. 40min.)
From Crookstone Knoll the route returns to Ringing Roger. Take the path that contours around the south of Kinder, around the top of Ollerbrook Clough then around to the rocks of Ringing Roger. At Ringing Roger there are good views over the Edale Valley with Mam Tor central. A small path can be found just below the high point of Ringing Roger that comes across from Golden Clough. Follow the path downhill to meet the main path down from Golden Clough and soon meet the uphill route at the flat area below Ringing Roger. From here it is steep down to Edale by the uphill route. There is a good view over Edale village from this steep hillside. Once at the Grindslow Valley floor follow the path over the river, through the village and onto the car park. There are many places in Edale where a cup of tea, or something stronger, may be purchased. (4.5kms. 20m. 1hrs. 20min.)
3rd June 2024 Not a very promising day from the start with drizzle about. However it turned out to be a great day. The walk over and around Kinder being the highlight with different views of the Peak District. And not at all busy.
18th April 2019 Just before Easter on a warm day but sadly visibility was a bit murky. I have found where many schools take their DofE expeditions - here. A good walk around the east of Kinder but some of the paths are not as marked on the path. I always find Kinder an interesting place for rock formations, perhaps none more so than at Ringing Rodger.
