Fire Risk in the Peaks: There have been numerous fires in the Peaks. These fires not only kill the ground level vegetation but also can go deep underground and destroy the underlying peat. There are signs all around the Peak District indicating that naked flames be they fires, barbecues, stoves or indeed any naked flames are banned in the Peak District. There is a hefty fine if these rules are broken. Take care when out walking and protect the Peaks. [July 2026]

Brown Knoll is the large hill sitting south of Kinder at the west end of the Edale Valley. Indeed the view up the Edale Valley is dominated by Brown Knoll. The path up Brown Knoll used to be a wet bog from kinder to Rushup Edge but no more. There is a very good stone path all the way. The actual trig point is set on a square of flag stones, some 0.5m above the level of the path showing the amount of erosion in the area.

Walk to Trig Point
Summary : Edale - Mam Nic - Rushop Edge - Brown Knoll - Jacaobs Ladder - Upper Booth - Edale
The easiest way is to leave Edale by the Pennine Way. First over the fields and then, from Upper Booth climbing up Jacobs Ladder to reach the col between Brown Knoll and Kinder. From here the flagstone path leads south to the summit of Brown Knoll and the trig point. (6km. 334m.)
