Autumn in the Peaks: Autumn is definitely here in the Peak District with the lovely colours. There has been a lot of rain after the drought this summer and although the reservoirs are still not full, the ground is wet. Take care especially over Kinder and Bleaklow. [November 2026]

Park at the National Trust car park adjacent to the Robin Hood Inn (please refrain from using the pub car park). This facility can fill up quickly during peak summer months and on sunny weekends.

Exit the car park and turn left onto the minor road. After approximately 50 meters, locate the junction for Birchen Edge on your right. Follow this path for 200 meters until you reach a steep ascending path on the right. Exercise caution on this climb, as the terrain features hidden rocks and uneven ground obscured by bracken.

Upon reaching the top of Birchen Edge, follow the northern path along the ridge, keeping the drop on your left. Shortly before reaching Nelson's Monument, notice three distinct glacial erratics to your right, named Victory, Reliance, and Royal Sovereign in honor of Admiral Nelson's fleet. Continue to Nelson's Monument, an impressive pillar erected in 1810 to commemorate the victory at Trafalgar, visible throughout much of the walk.

From the monument, proceed north along the edge. Take the direct path straight ahead through the sparse woodland rather than skirting to the right. Beyond the woods, the path descends toward the main road junction; note that the final section of this descent can be wet underfoot. (2.5kms. 90m. 1hrs. 0min.)

Just before the road junction, take the path running parallel to the A621, which occasionally offers views down toward the road. Continue for roughly 500 meters until a prominent rock outcrop appears on the right. Cross the stile over the fence to explore the outcrop and view the road cutting through the valley gap.

Return to the main path over the fence, pass through a gate, and enter the light birch woodland approaching Gardom’s Edge. Follow the ridge path northward with the edge on your right. Pass through a gap in a stone wall where the trail continues between the wall and the drop. Upon passing a second wall marking the forest boundary, look into the adjoining field to spot the Three Men, a line of three prominent cairns.

Follow the wall line as it curves right to join a prominent cross-path connecting the A621 and A619. Turn left onto this trail toward the Robin Hood Inn, descending past another striking rock outcrop. At the main road, cross the final stile and follow the short roadside pavement back to the National Trust car park. (3.0kms. 40m. 1hrs. 0min.)

29th June 2026 For this walk the start was the road junction just north of Birchen Edge. Decided to walk around the valley clockwise, so off to Birchen Edge first. The ground was dry and an easy walk up to the summit of Birchen Edge. Then it was along the edge and down to the Robin Hood Inn. After a short walk alongside the road it was to to Gardom's Edge. The top of Gardom's Edge has lots of bracken at present but the birch forest is still magnificent. Then it was back to the car via the good paths.

10th November 2025 Parked at the roadside north of these edges and then walked down Gardoms and back up Birchen Edge. Great walk with good views. Few pople about.

28th May 2025 For a change parked the car at roadside north of Birchen's Edge. Walked down Gardom's Edge, past the Robin Hood Pub and then up Birchen Edge to the monument and the 'Three Ships' rock formation. A lovely late spring day with great views over much of the Peak District

2nd May 2024 A nice sunny day, which was in contrast to earlier in spring. This is a great short walk with great views. From the top of the edges are extensive views of much of the Peak District. The Birch Woodland at the top of both edges is great to amble through, taking in the surroundings.
